Ashfall Advisory.

A lot of people have been referring to the recent eruptions of Mt. Redoubt as the Y2K of 2009. It really bugged me when I heard so many people say that especially since we never know what is going to happen to us and when; so yes, we do prepare (well, most of us do) when we're told that we're in danger of a disaster, whether it is big or small. Isn't it always better to overprepare than to not be prepared at all?

If you have followed the news at all, you've heard that Mt. Redoubt has erupted several times. The last time that it erupted was yesterday at 1:00 pm and that was the 18th eruption since March 22nd! So far there have been 250 cancelled flights in and out of Anchorage. I have really been intrigued by the whole volcano thing, since it is a first for me. However, it kind of began to feel like a "cry wolf" thing, because every time it would erupt, the ash would either go north of us or south of us, but never at us. And again, for that I was super grateful, but at the same time I wanted to experience it! Well, I got my wish on Saturday afternoon.

On our way home from Girdwood we could just see the ash in the air up ahead. It is hard to describe; it didn't look like a thunderstorm, it didn't look like regular "wispy" clouds, and it didn't look like fog. By the time we got home, about a half hour later, the ash was steadily falling. We quickly bundled Gus-Gus (that's what our truck has been named) up in a grande tarp that we purchased several months ago.
We awoke Sunday morning to a covering of ash everywhere. It was a little hard to notice as the skies were grey and the light was flat, but it was on everything! It probably doesn't look like much, but there was a lot of ash on the tarp! It is so fine that it is hard to get off, and you can't just rub it off of your vehicle because it scratches the paint. We need to get a carwash soon to get it all the way off the truck.
